Three reasons you're gaining weight and how to fix it!

Sep 21, 2023

It’s not your metabolism. It’s you.

It’s not ‘getting older’. It’s you.

It’s not ‘just the way it is’. It is you.

Harsh truth, I know, but I’ve always been honest, and I always will be.

Scientific studies show that our TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) doesn’t change all that much in our adult years (tagged as being 20-60).

This indicates that our metabolism doesn’t slow down or stop all of a sudden. And that there’s no significant change due to age either.

But you’ve noticed an uptick in weight, right? So, what gives? What is happening here?

If you’ve noticed a marked weight gain as the years have passed, that likely means one of three (or ALL!) things are happening:

  1. You’ve become less active than you were before. More driving, less walking. More sitting around, less exercise.
  2. You’re playing a little fast & loose with your eating habits. And more importantly, you’re not owning up to it. Bites, licks, tastes, and that Friday Wine-Down all count here, sis.
  3. You’ve lost muscle mass (pretty normal as you age if you’re not intentionally building it) which affects your natural ability to burn calories at the same rate as before. Less muscle mass = Slower/Lower Burn

All of this is within your control.

You get to drive this. You get to decide how much (if any!) weight you gain. Your daily choices can literally make or break you here.

So, what to do about it?

  1. Move more. Period. Wear a fitness tracker. Aim for 10k steps daily. Take the stairs, and walk whenever you can. Get a gym membership, find a walking partner, whatever it takes to get more movement in.
  2. Be honest with yourself. Start tracking your meals and snacks. Everything adds up. Do not let things slip through the cracks.
  3. Lift weights. Strength training is key for maintaining and building lean muscle. Commit to 2-3x’s a week in the gym using weights that are heavy for you, and eat protein too!

Sure, you can blame your age or your metabolism or even just accept things as they are. Fine. Do it.

But understand that playing the blame game will only keep you stuck.

It doesn’t take a lot to feel good in your body. But it does take doing something.

So do it.
