Counting Macros vs. Counting Calories

macros-vs-calories

Have you been wondering whether you should be counting calories or tracking macros?

If so, then this post is for you!

First, what’s the difference between calories and macros?

Calories are the overall energy you consume (or expend) in a day.

They’re made up of everything you consume. From the morning coffee with half-and-half, to the Friday pizza, to movie theater popcorn you snagged from your kid’s lap.

Macros (short for macronutrients) are the specific measurements of specific nutrients we get from those calories.

They are broken down into proteins, carbohydrates, fats. And when you follow a macro program, you are ‘assigned’ a specific count for each macro.

Both calorie counting and macro tracking can be effective for weight loss. And, so long as you’re in a deficit (meaning consuming less energy than you expend), you will see a drop on the scale.

The difference comes in when it comes to your body composition.

When we choose to track macros vs. only counting calories, we can do two things at once: 1) reduce body fat, and 2) have better control over our body shape.

Here’s an example…

My scale weight is the same in both pictures.

On the left, I was only counting calories. On the right, I was tracking macros.

It’s a pretty significant difference, though, isn’t it?

On the right, I was prioritizing protein, so I was maintaining better lean muscle mass, which helped me look leaner and tighter. Whereas on the left, I was only focused on calories (and probably not getting nearly enough protein in the process), which helped me drop scale weight but didn’t do much for my body composition.

Here at G-Transformation Academy, we focus on teaching our clients to reach their health and body composition goals using macros because we believe it is the healthiest, easiest, and most efficient way to lose, gain, or maintain weight without cutting out food groups or feeling overly restricted.

Our team meets with our clients regularly to ensure that macros are being tracked accurately without causing overwhelm, burnout, or creating unhealthy food relationships…things that often happen on low-calorie, highly restrictive diets.

Macro tracking is a highly effective way to lose fat and improve your body composition, and we’ve got it all down to a fool-proof science. When you work with us, we help you shape your body composition, increase your metabolism, and improve your overall health…while gaining the Total Food Freedom you deserve!
