How to travel AND meet your goals.
Jan 25, 2021My husband and I travel A LOT. But we don’t let traveling throw us off our goals. Here’s how we travel and enjoy without gaining a ton of weight:
- We rent a hotel room that has a fridge and microwave or better yet, an AirBnB that has a full kitchen.
- We do a search for area restaurants we’d like to try, then plan to hit one each day.
- Upon arrival, we hit up the local grocery store to shop for essentials we can have on hand to make healthy breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks, around our planned meals out.
- We incorporate exercise by hitting the hotel gym, a local fitness center, or simply getting out in nature for walks, or jogs in the park.
One of the biggest things we do is also give ourselves room to enjoy. If we are too strict with our diets, we end up feeling like we’ve ‘missed out’ and we will likely binge on gas station donuts. By planning our meals and snacks, and by having some super essentials on hand at all times, we’re able to indulge here and there on local specialties while also maintaining our health results and staying energized for our adventures.
Here are some of our favorite travel go-to food items we buy and keep in our fridge at our rental:
Protein
Grilled chicken breast chunks
Cauliflower coated chicken tenders
Seitan
Whole eggs
Women’s Best Cookies n Cream vegan protein powder
Tuna packets
Veggies
Bell peppers
Cucumbers
Tomatoes
Onions
Mushrooms
Avocados
Kale salad mix
Other
Everything but the Bagel seasoning
Dark roast kcups
Aunt Millie’s light bread
Fit Crunch bars
Bananas
Fun
Sunkist Diet Orange soda
LilBuff Protein cakes
Pop Chips
White chocolate creamer
For the most part we use protein and veggies as meal prep (stir fry, salads, Buddha bowls). We stick to veg and protein mostly because a lot of restaurant meals and local snacks are lower in these two areas and higher in fats and carbs. So, we meet our protein and veggie goals at ‘home’ and enjoy our carbs and fats while we’re out.
Traveling doesn’t have to be complicated and you don’t have to miss out on all the local flavor either. It’s not all or nothing. You just have to take a beat to make a plan…then stick to it!
